Description
130,000 Sq. Ft., 6± acres
Tax Parcel ID: 52-05-266-002-01
Zoned: Industrial 2
Property 1 is the former K. I. Sawyer Air Force Base Command Center and SAGE (Semi-Automatic Ground Environment) Data Center (DC-14) Building. The 6 acre site has two buildings: the main 3 story building which totals 120,000 Sq. Ft. and a smaller single story support building totaling 10,000 Sq. Ft. which could be used for storage or back-up generators/battery power cells.
Originally constructed by the US Air Force in 1958 and going online in 1959, the SAGE system was a network linking Air Force and later FAA General Surveillance Radar Stations into a centralized center for Air Defense. SAGE directed and controlled the NORAD response to potential Soviet Air Attacks. The IBM AN/FSQ-7 computers that compiled the data from the site each took up 22,000 Sq. Ft. and occupied an entire floor of the facility.
The building boasts a 15" reinforced poured concrete structure, including the roof. It was built to withstand pressure from thermonuclear warheads detonating and hardening to reduce the effects of electromagnetic pulses (EMP). This makes it a perfect candidate for use as a data center and the existing freight elevator provides easy moving of equipment from one level to another.
AT&T occupies a small portion of the property and has a Point-of-Presence (POP). The FAA previously operated radar for homeland defense at this building.
The building is located just 15 minutes SE from Marquette, the largest city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Closed for military use since 1995 it is the perfect opportunity for a buyer wanting to upgrade to a mission critical Tier 3 Data Center, bitcoin mining operation, a doomsday bunker or just own the most unique building in the UP in which to base their business.
Buyers should definitely keep this property on their radar.
